We opened here in 2021 and set out to make a specialist centre that feels modern but homely, a calm place to talk about surgery and have it done.

Plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery

Dr Bülent Yaprak

Plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon, FEBOPRAS

Bülent was a consultant at Waikato Hospital for over ten years, including a term as Clinical Director of Plastic Surgery, before moving to full-time private practice in 2024. He does facial, breast and body surgery, hand and wrist surgery, skin cancer surgery and hair transplants.

He studied medicine at Hacettepe University in Ankara and trained in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at Istanbul Medical Faculty. In New Zealand he completed a plastic surgery fellowship at Waikato Hospital and a hand surgery fellowship at Middlemore Hospital, then worked as a consultant plastic and hand surgeon at Waikato Hospital from 2012 to 2023.

He is a Fellow of the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and a member of NZAPS, ASAPS, ISAPS and ISHRS.

Dr Deirdre Seoighe

Plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Emerald Plastic Surgery

Deirdre joined Waikato Hospital in 2017 and later led its Plastic Surgery Department as Head of Department. Her work covers hand and wrist surgery, skin cancer, breast surgery, burns and scar reconstruction, and body contouring.

More about Deirdre

She graduated with honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2003, completed a research master's in surgery, and passed her fellowship exams in plastic and reconstructive surgery in 2015. She was a locum consultant at Galway University Hospital before coming to New Zealand for a burns fellowship at Middlemore Hospital, where she still operates at the National Burns Unit.

She is a member of the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons and the Australian and New Zealand Burn Association, and a mother of four.

Dr Simon Nicholson

Plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon, Apollo Plastic Surgery

Simon trained in the UK and has been a consultant in Hamilton since 2019. His interests are hand surgery, skin cancer, breast surgery, and surgical and non-surgical aesthetic treatments.

He qualified in 2007 and finished higher surgical training in Yorkshire in 2017, including fellowships in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in Newcastle upon Tyne and hand surgery at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, where he gained the BSSH hand surgery diploma.

He came to New Zealand in 2017 for further fellowships in plastic and hand surgery, and in 2021 became clinical lead for hand surgery in the Plastic Surgery Department at Waikato Hospital.

Dr Tarek Saleh

Gynaecologist, FRANZCOG

Tarek trained in obstetrics and gynaecology in New Zealand and has a special interest in endometriosis, pelvic pain and pelvic floor surgery. He spent two years in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery training as an AGES fellow, and later became lead laparoscopic surgeon in his unit and AGES Training Program Director.

The centre

It's a modern building, but we wanted it to feel homely rather than clinical, which is why one wall is covered in Van Gogh's almond blossoms.

There are two procedure rooms where many operations are done under local anaesthetic, so you're awake, comfortable and home the same day. That includes a lot of skin cancer removals, hand operations such as carpal tunnel release, and eyelid surgery. Anything that needs a general anaesthetic is done at a private hospital in Hamilton.

Radiology, physiotherapy and other specialists are close by, and plenty of our patients travel in from around the Waikato, the Bay of Plenty and Auckland.

What procedures are done at the centre?

The centre has two local anaesthetic procedure theatres and consultation rooms. Many skin cancer and skin lesion removals, hand procedures such as carpal tunnel and trigger finger release, eyelid surgery and other minor procedures can be done here while you are awake and comfortable. Gynaecology consultations and appearance medicine treatments also take place at the centre. Surgery that needs a general anaesthetic is performed at a private hospital in Hamilton.

Is there a gynaecologist at Waikato Specialist Centre?

Yes. Dr Tarek Saleh, a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG), consults at the centre. He has a special interest in endometriosis, pelvic pain, pelvic floor problems and advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

Where can I get cosmetic injectables or skin treatments in Hamilton?

Do I need a GP referral?

You can contact a specialist's rooms directly to make an appointment. A GP referral is recommended, and is usually needed if you plan to claim through health insurance or ACC.

Can I use health insurance or ACC?

Many treatments offered by our specialists can be claimed through health insurance, and injury-related treatment may be covered by ACC. Each specialist's team can explain what applies to you and help with prior approval.
